Abstract Text:
A reformulation of the ideal MHD equilibrium relations is used to extend earlier results, (Phys. Plasmas 21, 0022515, 2014). That work entailed an expansion in the amplitudes of the helical magnetic field components. Earlier work of Bernard and Tataronis, ( j. Math. Phys, 26,2370, 1985) considered an expansion about the magnetic axis and concluded that resonances invariably break up the equilibrium flux surfaces. Before a consideration of expansions about the magnetic axis, a highly singular curve, it is reasonable to explore the possibility of expansions about a given flux surface. We show by examples that it is possible to preserve flux surfaces to all orders in an expansion in the parameter the distance from the initial flux surface. We then return to discuss possible expansions about the magnetic axis.
