Abstract Text:
Symmetry transformations have been applied in many different contexts in plasma physics, such as inferring confinement scaling properties and deriving conservation laws. The classical Lie group analysis provides a general algorithm for determining the point symmetries of any system of equations. However the standard procedure is not directly applicable to equations involving integral relations, which are a universal feature of plasma kinetic models.

We present a set of symmetry transformations for the reduced gyrokinetic model derived by Zocco and Schekochihin, which contains integral terms corresponding to gyroaveraging, as well as integral closure relations relating fluid quantities to the distribution function. Along with the physically expected symmetries, we obtain a set of generalized rotations that simultaneously transform both the coordinates and the fields. Such transformations complement numerical simulation in several ways. In particular they can bring new insight into analytically intractable models, while providing verification criteria for simulations. They can even be used to generate new approximate solutions from existing numerical output. Examples will be provided.
