Abstract Text:
We present the implementation and verification of a hybrid-spectral solver for the Poisson equation and Ampère’s law in the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code XGC. The new solver allows for more accurate treatment of low and intermediate toroidal mode numbers. To achieve this increased accuracy, the new field solver utilizes a toroidally spectral formulation that – unlike XGC’s usual field solver – does not approximate the poloidal magnetic field as small compared to the toroidal magnetic field. Since the toroidally spectral solver is used only for low toroidal mode numbers, which are particularly vulnerable to the approximation of small poloidal magneticd field, it can be efficiently implemented and parallelized, and used alongside XGC’s usual Poisson solver.
