Abstract Text:
The interaction of energetic particles with electromagnetic perturbations in
magnetized fusion plasmas affects both stability and transport. In order to
better understand these interactions, a continuum solution to the drift kinetic
equation (DKE) for energetic particles has been implemented in the NIMROD code.
First-order, finite-Larmor-radius corrections involving the time-derivative
of the magnetic moment were recently added. In linear calculations, these
corrections are proportional to the equilibrium parallel current. Their effect
on linear growth rates for ideal kink modes, which are relevant to the appearance
of giant sawteeth in DIII-D shot #96043, will be discussed. Also their
impact on growth and rotation rates for the ITPA-TAE (toroidal Alfven eigenmode)
benchmark will be presented.
