Abstract Text:
Simulation models using fully kinetic ions and massless fluid electrons are constructed and verified for simulations of waves with frequencies comparable or higher than ion cyclotron frequency. Quasi-neutrality condition are used to remove higher frequency electron plasmas waves. One of such models is formulated using scalar and vector potentials with a prescribed magnetic equilibrium (such as tokamaks) for simulation of ion cyclotron mission (ICE) and global Alfven eigenmodes (GAE), which have been routinely observed in tokamaks. Another model is formulated using electric and magnetic vector fields for simulations of kinetic equilibrium of the filed reversed configuration (FRC), where ions (specially fast ions) are not magnetized. Analytic dispersion relation of these two model are shown to be identical. The parallel and perpendicular modes include modified shear Alfven wave (SAW) and generalized ion Bernstein waves (IBW), respectively, with ion cyclotron resonances. They further reduce to SAW and compressional Alfven waves (CAW) when ion kinetic effects are removed.
