Abstract Text:
The calculation and optimization of magnetohydrodynamic equilibria in stellarator fusion energy systems is examined. Recent work includes the comparison of numerical calculations of MHD equilibria, with and without magnetic islands, across four different codes: VMEC, DESC, SPEC and SIESTA [1]. This work includes the comparison of vacuum and finite-beta calculations for a reference configuration and the development of numerical magnetic diagnostic tools in Python for the comparison of these equilibria. More recent work includes an optimization study of quasi-helically symmetric configurations across a range of number of field periods and the development of coils for the Stellarator Base Case configuration [2].
