Abstract Text:
In this contribution, we demonstrate that a rotating Z-pinch can exist in metastable states with significantly better MHD confinement than in the static case. We solve a combinatorial problem to determine the available energy of a metastable state as a function of the plasma beta and Mach number. The ground state is reached by expulsion of an order-unity (accurately calculable) mass fraction of the plasma, leading to a similar reduction in its thermal energy. We discuss to what extent a rotating Z-pinch might constitute a minimal physical setup in which to study the nonlinear MHD dynamics of an H-mode plasma.
