Abstract Text:
Various forms of reduced MHD in axisymmetric domains comprise infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems [1]. Knowledge of that structure can be used for different purposes, including finding novel exact solutions and guiding the design of structure-preserving simulations (see e.g. [2]). Various forms of reduced MHD have been obtained for stellarators [3]. We show that a variant of reduced MHD for stellarators also comprises an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system. When expressed in Boozer coordinates, the bracket has the same structure as reduced MHD brackets for axisymmetric domains. From a coordinate-independent perspective, satisfaction of the Jacobi identity is equivalent to a compatibility condition involving the hidden symmetry generator underlying Boozer coordinates. Both 2-field and 4-field models will be discussed.
