Abstract Text:
While particle transport in magnetically confined plasmas has been well explored, many simulation codes ignore the impurities present in the plasmas of actual fusion devices. The impact of the impurities is relatively small due to their low densities and large masses, but impurity accumulation is an important concern for stellarators, where particle pinches may arise from non-ambipolar radial electric fields.
We are using GX [Mandell, et al, JPP 2018], a gyrokinetic flux tube turbulence code, and Trinity [Barnes, et al, PoP 2010], a turbulent transport solver, to study multi-species plasma profiles in stellarators. We study the presence of impurities in the core and edges and examine the corresponding terms in the transport equations.
