Abstract Text:
Models show that twisitring stellarator plasma boundaries can be achieved with permanent magnets and simple planar coils. MUSE, a tabletop stellarator being built at PPPL, promises to show excellent quasi-symmetry and achieve very low effective ripple, through the use of 16 planar coils and nearly 10,000 neodymium magnets distributed in an optimized design around the vacuum vessel. This poster will discuss the iterative process of finding an arrangement of permanent magnets that meet plasma and engineering constraints, analytical force calculations that informed MUSE’s assembly sequence, and the general design features of MUSE: a first of its kind, proof of concept, permanent magnet stellarator.
