Abstract Text:
The penetration limits of resonant magnetic field perturbations at the boundary of toroidal plasma compression experiments are calculated and compared with nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulations and results from the LM26 experiment at General Fusion. The calculated and simulated penetration limits are in general agreement, with $B_r/B_0sim 10^{-3}$, significantly higher than conventional tokamaks. Equilibrium fields are determined by the compression geometry and conserved quantities, such as angular momentum, magnetic flux and entropy. The analytic calculations are based on a torque balance model and the MHD simulations are conducted with the NIMROD code. We identify sources of differences between the simulation and analytic results, stemming from the physics in the two models. The magnetic perturbations in these experiments, due to misalignment of the lithium liner and deformation due to buckling, are characterized and compared with the calculated penetration limits. Conditions which could increase the perturbation limits even further are explored and discussed.
