Abstract Text:
This work extends the capabilities Pleiades, a Grad-Shafranov equilibrium solver designed for anisotropic high-β plasmas in axisymmetric mirrors, to include the presence of sloshing fast electrons. The fast electron contribution, generated by electron cyclotron heating, is determined by numerically solving the steady-state quasilinear kinetic equation, including finite Larmor radius effects exactly via semi-analytic expressions. When using a Legendre polynomial expansion for the pitch angle variable, the contribution from the Bessel function can be computed exactly without requiring Taylor expansions or addition formulas. The energy dependence in the coupled system is then solved via a finite element method. We apply this to Wisconsin High Temperature Superconducting Axisymmetric Magnetic Mirror experiments with the goal of inferring the presence of sloshing electrons near the turning points of the mirror.
