Abstract Text:
Collisionless magnetic-mirror plasmas have anisotropic pressure and hence non-Maxwellian equilibrium distributions. We study the effects of non-Maxwellian distributions upon plasma stability in a bounce-averaged linear gyrokinetic model for electrostatic flute-like modes in a "local" approximation, derived as a subset of the model equations in Abel et al. (2013); Frieman & Chen (1982). The model yields a dispersion relation that we numerically solve for arbitrary gyrotropic distributions and magnetic geometry, with the drift-resonant denominator kept intact. Preliminary calculations of sloshing-ion and sloshing-electron distribution stability, with parameters similar to the Wisconsin HTS Axisymmetric Mirror experiment, will be discussed.
